Nitrous Oxide Oral (laughing gas) Sedation
NITROUS OXIDE, Sometimes Called “Laughing Gas”
This option is a wonderful one to help patients overcome their dental anxiety. Nitrous Oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is mixed with oxygen and provides a relaxing, calming effect.
Rather than a medication taken prior to the dental visit, nitrous oxide is administered during the dental procedure.
How Nitrous Oxide Works?
- After reviewing your health history, your dentist will determine if it’s right for you.
- Then we place a small mask over your nose and you simply breathing normally. After only a few minutes you will notice the calming effects.
- Commonly our patients describe the feeling as being relaxed, unconcerned, and slightly numb or disconnected from what’s happening around them.
- We adjust the dosage of the nitrous oxide gas to fit your needs – and you can also control it with your breathing. The more deeply you breathe through your nose the more you’ll feel its effect.
.
Nitrous Oxide Effects Wear Off Quickly
Another benefit of nitrous oxide is the effect wears off quickly, making it safe for you to walk and continue your daily activities after your dental appointment.

For those with dental anxiety, Sugar Bug Buster Dental is pleased to offer both oral sedation options, as well as nitrous oxide, as safe and effective ways to help your child relax during his/her dental appointment.
Laughing Gas will not be effective if the child is moving or having difficulty breathing from his nose or any medical condition that might contraindicate the administration of Nitrous Oxide.
Our experienced Dentists at Sugar Bug Buster will determine and recommend which method should be used with your child after carefully reviewing the medical history and cooperative level of your child.
